Terry Malloy works on the docks in Hoboken, New Jersey. His brother Charley is the assistant to a mob boss named Johnny Friendly, who runs the union. The mob murders Joey Doyle because he wanted to testify against the mob run union. Terry and the other longshoremen refuse to cooperate with Father Barry in bringing Joey's assassin to justice because they fear their lives will be threatened, too. Meanwhile, Terry gets involved with Joey's sister, Edie. Edie is home, on leave from college. She is not in a hurry to go back because she wants to solve her brother's murder.
