The story begins in 1923, when boys Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker pretend to fight Germans. They start a cropduster accidentally which exhilarates them. Danny's father drags him home, chastising and beating him. The boy’s father explains that he still bears scars from fighting in World War I. In January 1941, Rafe (played by Ben Affleck) and Danny (played by Josh Hartnett) remain the best of friends and are both First Lieutenants in the Army. Rafe had met Evelyn (played by Kate Beckinsale), a Navy Nurse who, despite his dyslexia, passes his physical examination. They start dating, but Rafe had already volunteered for the Royal Air Force Eagle Squadron. As a result, Evelyn and Danny believe he was killed. After three months, Evelyn and Danny develop feelings for each other after mourning Rafe. On December 6, 1941, Rafe unexpectedly returns to the Pearl Harbor region. After his plane crashed, he was able to float until being saved by a French fishing boat. After realizing that Evelyn and Danny are together, Rafe is hurt and feels betrayed. The two guys get into a fight at a local bar. The next morning, there is a Japanese attack upon Pearl Harbor. After serving in the war, Rafe and Danny are promoted to Captain and awarded Silver Stars. They are assigned to a dangerous mission. Before departing, Evelyn meets with Rafe to tell him she is expecting Danny’s child. She does not want him to know so that he may focus on the mission. She will remain with Danny, though she still loves Rafe, which he accepts. Danny is killed and Rafe is discharged. He and Evelyn raise Danny's biological son at the old farm in Tennessee.
