Disney's Pollyanna is a 1960 film featuring Hayley Mills. She won an Academy Juvenile Award and was nominated for Best Actress by The British Academy of Film and Television Arts for the role. Jane Wyman, Richard Egan, Adolphe Menjou, Agnes Moorehead, and Karl Malden also star in the film. The movie is based on the book written by Eleanor Porter but was adapted into a screenplay by the director David Swift. Pollyanna is an orphan who moves into a tiny community with her wealthy Aunt Polly. She is an optimistic child who spreads happiness throughout the town. She makes friends easily, including a recluse named Mr. Pendergast and Mrs. Snow, the town hypochondriac. The townspeople desire to raise money to rebuild an orphanage, but Aunt Polly, who has a lot of control over the town, is against it. The people ignore Aunt Polly's disapproval and plan a carnival to raise money anyway. Aunt Polly is angry about them defying her wishes, and she forbids Pollyanna to attend the carnival. Pollyanna sneaks out of the house and participates in the carnival, having a fun time. After the carnival, she climbs up a tree to her bedroom in hopes of avoiding Aunt Polly. Pollyanna falls out of the tree and is severely injured, even losing the use of her legs. This crushes her spirit, and the whole town is saddened by the tragic accident. The overwhelming love and support from the community bring back Pollyanna's vivacious spirit. Aunt Polly takes her to Baltimore in hopes that her condition can be corrected. Through almost losing her niece, Aunt Polly learns that she loves Pollyanna. Pollyanna's electric personality and positive energy turns an entire town from sour to sweet. She changes the lives of the people she comes into contact with. The town becomes closer and the people are better because of her influence.
