The Littlest Rebel was a family comedy drama that was released in 1935. The film centers around a former civil war rebel who decides to sneak back to his plantation in order to see his family. The father is arrested, but a kindly Yankee decides that he is going to help the father escape. Things go wrong during the escape, and the entire family is chased by the Yankees. Shirley Temple plays the daughter in this film, and she has to help her family escape persecution as they make their way to safety. After the family is arrested, it is planned for them to be executed. Shirley Temple, with the help of a slave by the name of Bojangles Robinson has to plead with Abraham Lincoln in order to have her father escape death. The film The Littlest Rebel was written Edward Peple as a play, and then adapted for the screen by Edwin J. Burke. The film was directed by David Butler. Shirley Temple’s character is named Virgie Cary.
