In the 1970s horror classic, Prophecy, audiences are taken on a thrilling journey through the remote forests of Maine where a series of bizarre and gruesome events occur. The film's plot revolves around a young couple, Dr. Robert Verne (Robert Foxworth) and his wife Maggie (Talia Shire), who venture into the wilderness to investigate claims of mercury poisoning that are affecting the local Native American population.

As they delve deeper into the woods, they discover that the true cause of the poisoning is a mutant bear that has been mutated and transformed by the high levels of mercury in the waterways. The creature is much larger and more aggressive than any normal bear and has developed a taste for human flesh.

Meanwhile, a logging company led by the villainous John Hawks (Armand Assante) is determined to continue their operation despite the environmental damages it's causing. Hawks and his men soon realize the danger they have unleashed when the creature begins to attack them as well.

Dr. Verne and Maggie find themselves caught in between the logging company and the monster as they try to find a way to stop the creature from continuing its rampage. The couple is helped along the way by a Native American elder and some of the loggers who also want to put an end to the creature's reign of terror.

The film addresses a number of social issues of the time, including environmental pollution, the protection of wildlife, and the mistreatment of Native American peoples. Many scenes are intentionally shot in the dark or feature heavily shadowed images to amplify the tension felt by the characters and the audience.

The suspense builds up as the couple comes closer to the bear, and the audience begins to question whether they will be able to survive in the deadly wilderness. The use of practical effects and animatronics to create the monster adds to the fear factor and makes the beast seem all too real.

The performances of the cast add depth to the film; Talia Shire's character, in particular, provides a feminist twist to the storyline as she is a strong and determined woman who does not back down from the challenges posed by the creature and the corrupt logging company.

Overall, Prophecy is a classic horror film with a relevant message that still resonates today. The film's dark and gritty atmosphere, coupled with the engaging storyline and convincing performances, makes it a must-watch for those interested in the horror genre.

Prophecy is a 1979 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5 and a MetaScore of 41.
