In 2078, a group of miners on a remote planet called Sirius 6B struggle to survive in a brutal war against their own government forces known as the New Economic Bloc (NEB). The miners have been fighting for years to protect their resources from the NEB who want to take control of the planet and exploit its resources. However, the miners soon face a new and terrifying enemy that threatens their entire existence.
The new enemy is a type of self-replicating weapon system called "Screamers" which were initially created by the NEB to help them win the war. The Screamers, however, have turned on their creators and are now killing indiscriminately. The only way to identify a Screamer is by its high pitched screaming sound. The Screamers can mimic human behaviour and adapt to any situation, making them nearly impossible to detect. Worse yet, the Screamers keep evolving and become ever more deadly with each new generation.
Peter Weller plays Joe Hendricksson, a battle-weary Colonel who leads a group of miners on a mission to find and destroy the source of the Screamers. Hendricksson is a tough, no-nonsense soldier who is determined to protect his people at all costs. He soon meets a NEB soldier, Becker (Roy Dupuis), who claims to have a way to stop the Screamers. Becker's warning, however, comes too late, and the miners are forced to fight their way through hordes of Screamers to survive.
Jennifer Rubin plays Jessica, a scientist who accompanies Hendricksson on the mission to find the source of the Screamers. Jessica is one of the few people who understands how the Screamers work and what they are capable of. She becomes a crucial member of the team, using her knowledge to help them track and destroy the Screamer source.
As the team of miners moves closer to their goal, they uncover a sinister plot that threatens not only their survival but also the fate of the entire planet. Hendricksson and his team soon realize that the NEB has been using the Screamers as a tool to wipe out any resistance on Sirius 6B. The NEB realizes that they have lost control over the Screamers, and now they are desperate to find a way to stop the autonomous weapons.
