Shoot ‘Em Up is a 2007 film starring Clive Owen, Monica Belluci and Paul Giamatti. It is an action thriller and black comedy. The film is notable for its stylistic violence, expertly-crafted action sequences, overly acted characters, and sharp wit. Smith, the film’s hero, played by Owen, spends most of the film protecting an infant, rescued from a dying mother, from the clutches of Karl Hertz, played by Giamatti, while Donna, played by Belluci, occasionally accompanies Smith while caring for the infant. Hertz works for a shady organization bent on kidnapping the child for some nefarious purpose, which Smith must learn if he has any hope of protecting the baby, while a third faction attempts to claim the child as well. It seems no one cares for the child’s safety except for Smith and Donna. The plot takes an engrossing political turn as Smith and Hertz blast their way through dozens of enemies, alleyways, stores, stations, and streets. All the while, Smith’s origins and past creep up on him while he battles the poor-aiming hordes of politicians and big business CEOs. The film is 86 minutes long and rated R for violence, language, and adult sexual themes.
