The movie "Starman" is an unconventional love story and action adventure flick with sometimes humorous and sometimes touching insight into the human condition. Jenny Hayden (played by Karen Allen) is a young widow, still crushed by the death of the husband she so dearly loved. The Starman (played by Jeff Bridges) is an alien crashlanded "in her backyard" (so to speak), stranded and in desperate straits. The alien, a blue glowing lightform, enters Jenny's relatively isolated cabin home. There it finds a keepsake locket of her dead husband's hair and samples the DNA it contains in order to create a clone. This clone is his means to temporarily survive a hostile, alien world while he travels to a rendezvous point from which his people will rescue him. Starman needs her help to survive and escape. Jenny, traumatized by events which are difficult to comprehend or even believe, is initially focused on just trying to escape what amounts to attempted kidnapping as he insists on getting her help. Though desperate, he is no monster and treats her remarkably well. As they travel together, he gets to sample human culture, make wry observations about human foibles, and grows to care for Jenny. She comes to understand how much he cares about all life forms, how peaceful and deeply compassionate he is, and be amazed by some of his otherwordly abilities. As the U.S. government tries to hunt them down, a bond forms which goes beyond merely doing what is necessary. Jenny becomes Starman's loyal ally, defying her own government to save his life and help him go home again. Her gift of life to him is reciprocated: He also saves her life when she should die as they flee and, beyond that, gives her a child with her late husband's DNA even though she had been infertile. Don't miss this deeply moving story of love, cross cultural communication and the wonderment of life. It will stay with you for years to come.
