The film's setting is in 1863, where an alternate Europe has made significant strides in steampunk-themed innovations and technologies. Scientist Lloyd Steam and together with his son, Edward, have miraculously succeeded, following a lengthy journey and expedition, in discovering the long sought after pure mineral water. They theorized the water might be harnessed as a possible ultimate power source to run the steam engines. However, a trial in Russian Alaska goes terribly wrong, with Edward engulfed in freezing cold gases, but ends up in the creation of an odd spherical apparatus. The film eventually leads Ray to steal the ball to develop a makeshift rocket ride, and attempts to obtain entry to a floating while the British Royal Navy tries to shoot it down in vain. Along with the castle that is steered astray from the heated battle, the structure is becoming unstable and could blow up on top of the city. Ray and Lloyd rush to direct the castle across the Thames, in the process defeating Alfred that is also controlling some gigantic construction claws. At the last possible second Eddie, having metal body repelled the previous gunshot, appears to be alive and decides to assist. Ray then reinstalls the steam ball, and then proceeds to the main control room in attempt to make his final escape together with Scarlett with the help of an emergency jet pack. Meanwhile, Eddie and Lloyd stop the gigantic machine across the Thames and then proceeds to abandons the castle also. The castle finally detonates in a huge and spectacular explosion, sparing most of the metropolitan areas from devastation. The film's ending montage shows Ray returning home. Later, he becomes a global hero, and known to the world as Steamboy. Lloyd introduces Ray to electrical energy and ultimately passes away. The Great War is without question fought by the zeppelins and paratroopers. His father, Eddie, then founds a ?corporate conglomerate. Scarlet matures and becomes a famous pilot. ?
