In 1963, society's attitudes about sexual intercourse outside of marriage were very much less progressive than they are today, making this fictional but candid portrait of sex and gender issues that much more significant for the time period in which it was released. When a conservative woman from Upstate New York breaks off her marriage engagement due to differing opinions about premarital sex, she visits her older brother in New York City for advice and comfort. While the brother advises her to continue to be virtuous, and that she is not the last virgin left in New York, he is secretly himself a high-flying playboy as the two siblings' very different worlds crash together when their respective love interests turn out to have some connection.
