"Svengali" (1931) is an American movie based on George du Maurier's novel "Trilby." The title character in this early sound movie is a music instructor who uses hypnosis and telepathy to manipulate his female students. When one student that he's been seducing announces that she has forsaken her husband to be with him, he compels her to kill herself. Svengali then becomes infatuated with a young model -- who is in love with someone else. He hypnotizes her, too, and convinces her to fake her own death. Her lover, contrary to Svengali's hopes, does not forget her and eventually tracks her and Svengali down.
