Sweet Home is a 2015 American horror-thriller film directed by Anthony Scott Burns and written by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke. The movie stars Katherine Heigl, Patrick Wilson and child actress Madison Wolfe. The film tells the story of a couple who are grieving the death of their daughter and move into a new home in rural Maine, only to discover that it is haunted by a malicious spirit.
The movie opens with the couple, Lyla (Katherine Heigl) and John (Patrick Wilson), driving down a desolate Maine road in the winter. They are discussing their daughter â Lyla likes to talk about her while John feels the need to move on. They arrive at their new home, an old mansion with an unspecified history. The house is grand, but it's clear that there has been much work to be done before it can be habitable. The couple begins settling in and preparing to revive it. Lyla is hopeful that the fresh start will help them overcome the loss of their child.
Lyla is a talented artist, so she spends much of her time working on a new painting. John is a composer, and heâs excited about the setting as he sees it as an inspiration for his work. The only issue is that Lyla is not entirely convinced about the idea of being so cut off from civilization. She wants to make new friends and get involved in local events.
However, it quickly becomes apparent that there may be something off about the house. The first night, Lyla experiences nightmares about a young girl who is haunting the house. She discovers a room that has been locked for years and is filled with strange objects, creepy old dolls, and mysterious items. As they begin to experience peculiar events around the house and ghostly voices start to call Lyla by name, John begins to suspect that Lyla's imagination is getting the better of her. He suggests that they hire a handyman to fix the strange occurrences around the house, but this only makes things worse.
Throughout the film's progression, the tension builds steadily until Lyla realizes that the house may have some dark past. Without giving too much away, the climax of the film is both intense and emotional at the same time. Katherine Heigl is absolutely amazing in her role. She is vulnerable, scared, and emotional while adding an edge of strength.
Patrick Wilson is also rightly cast as the mourning husband. His character, John, is more stable than Lyla and doesn't believe in anything supernatural occurring in the house. However, Wilson's portrayal of John allows for the character to grow, so he becomes more open to the idea that there is an entity in their home that shouldn't be there.
One of the highlights of Sweet Home is Madison Wolfe's performance as Molly. She plays the haunted protagonist in the film and delivers a perfectly creepy performance for her ages. Her character is critical to tying the threads of the story together. Sheâs convincing in her role and played a crucial part in delivering the filmâs spooky atmosphere.
The use of cinematography in Sweet Home should also be noted. The camera work is superb and adds to the film's eerie and tense atmosphere. The pacing of the movie is steady, but the final half-hour of the film is a rollercoaster of emotions and just the right amount of jump scares.
Overall, Sweet Home is a nerve-wracking film that captures the mental and emotional isolation of the characters as they try to come to terms with the loss of their daughter. It's horror that hits close to home for the viewer, and its execution is flawless. The emotions that the film portrays are relatable to experience, so you can't help but put yourself in the main characters' shoes. The story is gripping, and the excellent acting leaves you with an eerie feeling once the credits roll.
Sweet Home is a 2015 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 20 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5 and a MetaScore of 22.
