The Black Hole takes place in the year 2130. It is about a deep space research vessel named the Palomino that is returning home from exploration. The crew is made up of Captain Dan Holland, First Officer Lieutenant Charlie Pizer, journalist Harry Booth, Dr. Kate McCrae, and Dr. Alex Durant. A robot named V.I.N.CENT (which stands for Vital Information Necessary CENTralized)travels with the crew. The vessel comes across a long lost ship that seems to reside safely within the gravitational pull of a black holes. The ship, identified as the USS Cygnus, is captained by a Dr. Hans Reinhardt who is the only person on-board save for the android crew. This science fiction adventure by The Walt Disney Company, was an early attempt at more adult-oriented films. It's PG rating, the first that Disney had produced, was due to mild language and violent themes. The Black Hole introduced subtexts and religious elements the company had not experimented with previously. Dr. Hans Reinhardt is the antagonist in the film along with his own robotic companion, Maximillian. Initially explaining to the crew of the Palomino that the Cygnus was crippled by a meteor field, Dr. Reinhardt also tells them that he plans to pilot the ship into the black hole. This revelation only adds to the doubts growing in the minds of the crew, with the exception of Durant, who wants to join Reinhardt in his journey. The loss of the crew aboard the Cygnus was explained as having all been sent home with the exception of Kate McCraes father, who had served aboard the ship. He stayed behind but died before the Palomino arrived. The group eventually find out that the androids are really the original human crew after being lobotomized. Events escalate quickly as the machine which holds the Cygnus in place is destroyed. After attempting to escape in a pod the crew find themselves on a direct path through the black hole.
