It is his destiny to become a famous magician. In the present day, Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton become the most famous magic act in Las Vegas. They do not even really like each other, but they make so much money it doesn't matter. They also have an assistant played by Olivia Wilde, whom they treat in a disrespectful manner. They are completely full of themselves, but they soon lack the right to be as their act becomes stale. The new generation of magic is represented by Jim Carrey's potrayal of Steve Gray, a magician who relies on dangerous stunts to shock the audience. Burt, who became estranged to Anton, works together with his assistant to try to get his career back on track. The way to do this is to upstage Steve Gray, and win back the audience he once had control of. Additionally, this journey attempts to teach Burt Wonderstone that he has treated a lot of people wrong. He must make personal and progessional changes to get back to where he wants to be.
