Yes Man stars Jim Carrey as the lead character, Carl Allen. Carl's life seems to be on a downward spiral; his wife divorced him and his job at the bank is not providing as much success as his bosses would like. One day, Carl runs into an old friend who seems to be extremely happy and satisfied with his own life. Carl wants to know the secret behind his friend's happiness, which he learns is due to a self-help program which teaches people to say yes to all of life's opportunities. Carl decides to go to a meeting to find out what takes place and at first does not buy into what the guru or motivational speaker is advising the crowd to do. When leaving the seminar, Carl encounters a homeless man in need of some cash. Deciding to follow the advice of the guru, Carl begins to say yes to everything people ask of him. This begins by giving the homeless man all of his cash as well as a ride to his friend's house, which leaves Carl in the middle of nowhere with an empty gas tank. Carl grabs his gas can and walks to the nearest service station where he meets a young and free-spirited girl named Allison, who is played by Zooey Deschanel. As the story progresses, Carl and Allison spend more time together and develop a romantic relationship. The movie is a lighthearted romantic comedy which takes a comedic look at the way people often participate in self-help programs in order to change their lives. At first, Carl goes along with the program's precepts to never say no to anything, which turns out to lead him into some unpleasant circumstances as his buddies find out what he is doing and use it to take advantage of his inability to say no. Ultimately, Carl needs to find a middle ground in order to lead the happy life he wants.
