The Opponent is a sports film that stars Erika Eleniak and James Colby. Erika Eleniak plays Patty, a beautiful young woman. Patty is struggling in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. The relationship gets worse and worse as the boyfriend becomes increasing violent. Fed up and unsure of how to leave him, Patty decides to take up boxing. She figures that by learning boxing she will be able to defend herself should her boyfriend become violent again. Her boyfriend is also threatening to put her on the street and she realizes that she needs a backup career plan. At first, Patty fits into the boxing world based upon her good looks. She is paid to be a ringside girl and hold up signs between matches. Patty then begins to practice boxing every day and she soon begins to attract the attention of some very important people. Fred is a boxing promoter at the club and he sees that Patty has talent. June is another female boxer that recognizes that Patty could pose some competition to her. Patty also meets Tommy, an expert trainer who helps her take her boxing ability to the next level. Patty and June are initially competitors but they soon begin to develop a strong friendship. June proves to be a good influence on Patty and she encourages her to leave her abusive relationship. Patty has immense anger from being in an abusive relationship for so long and she is soon able to release her energy in the boxing ring, taking her rage out on her opponents. Tommy is also a great assistance to Patty and their relationship quickly begins to turn romantic. Patty ends up becoming a serious competitor, winning her first boxing match. She leaves her abusive boyfriend behind as well.
