This movie version of the Sydney Sheldon novel has so many plot twists it will keep you guessing right up to the end. At its core, The Other Side of Midnight is a tale of two women. Noelle, a French beauty, meets Larry, a young American pilot during World War Two. He woos her and she falls passionately in love. He is ordered to the Pacific to fight the Japanese. He promises to return to Noelle. She waits fruitlessly in Paris, but Larry never returns. She channels the short-circuited emotions of romance into the darker motive of revenge. Larry has created a beautiful monster. Catherine was born in Chicago, the daughter of a salesman lost in illusions. She is very intelligent, but does not attract many friends. She moves to the fast lane in wartime Washington DC, and meets Larry. He is so handsome and smooth-talking they get married in a mad heartbeat. Meanwhile Noelle employs her wily personality and beautifully exotic looks to seduce a series of naïve men each richer and more powerful than the previous one. Along the way, she keeps tabs on Larry. Finally, she gets involved but does not fall in love with the rich and well-connected Constantin. Larry, who can’t seem to hold a flying job after the war, eventually is hired by Constantin. He and Noelle fall back madly in love. But Catherine won’t give Larry the divorce he craves. Worldly Noelle can’t handle the completion from the innocent Midwestern Catherine, who will not give up her love for Larry. So Noelle and Larry scheme together and try to eliminate Catherine. Catherine learns what they’re up to and escapes during a fierce storm. She gets confused and it looks like she drowns. But, not really, it seems. There are more twists in store.
