- 2 hr 15 min
The plot of 'Outlaw Josey Wales' unfolds during a period of time that spans before and after the Civil War. This film was a critically acclaimed Western, directed by, and starring Clint Eastwood which was filmed at a time when the making of Hollywood Westerns was a dying art form. The central character of the film is Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer who is turned into a fugitive after his wife and son were killed by a group of Union army "Redlegs". After losing his family, Wales joins up with a marauding guerrilla unit of bushwhackers making its way across Missouri. At war's end, the guerrillas are targeted by the government and are rounded up. Josie Wales fails to surrender, and he takes off on his own westward across the plains. He is pursued by a former friend and the Union officer who killed his family. At this point, Wales has nothing left to live for but revenge. Although his great desire is to be simply left alone, Josie Wales inexplicably becomes the nucleus of a growing band of renegades and castoffs from divergent parts and backstories. There is 'Lone Waite', a Cherokee Indian, a character played by Sondra Locke (in her first Clint Eastwood film), a Native American girl, and some settlers who run into Wales on their way out of Texas. After gunning down a detachment of Redlegs Wales has a $5,000 bounty award put on him. Now an outlaw, Wales escapes capture until he and some of his band are trapped inside a ranch house When attacked most of the defenders are killed but Wales in anger and out of ammunition mounts a horse and chases after the Captain who was pursuing him all along. Guns empty, Wales draws on the Captain and pulls the trigger a dozen or more times to no effect before killing the man with his own sword and obtaining the revenge he has long sought after.
