The Princess and the Warrior (2000) is a German film starring Franka Potente, whose flaming red hair in "Run Lola Run" first made her famous among American audiences. In this movie, Potente plays Sissi, a passive, shy nurse whose life centers around her job at a mental asylum. One day, drifter and former soldier Bodo (played by Benno Furmann) indirectly causes an accident that nearly kills Sissi, and immediately thereafter, saves her life before disappearing into the crowd again. The result is Sissi's growing certainty that her life and Bodo's are meant to be tied together by Fate, and she sets out to locate him.

Sheltered Sissi and her deceptively simple emotional state provide a key counter-balance for Bodo, whose past is a tapestry of trauma and darkness that also threatens his future. The question as to whether Fate meant to link these two, and if so, how they are meant to play roles in one another's lives, is at the heart of this complex film.
