The Rainbow Thief is a 1990 film that was directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky and stars Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, and Christopher Lee. The film tells the story of a strange and mysterious man named Aesop, played by Sharif, who steals rainbows from the sky in order to sell them to the highest bidder. Aesop lives a nomadic lifestyle, traveling from place to place with his partner in crime, a young boy named Katmandu, played by Jason Scott Lee. The two of them are constantly on the run from the authorities, as well as from a group of wealthy businessmen who are seeking to corner the market on the rainbow trade.

Peter O'Toole plays a wealthy industrialist named McNair, who becomes obsessed with acquiring a rainbow for himself. He enlists the help of his butler, played by Christopher Lee, to find Aesop and convince him to sell him a rainbow. However, as McNair becomes more and more obsessed with the rainbow, it becomes clear that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

Throughout the film, Aesop and Katmandu encounter a host of other characters, each with their own motivations and desires. There is a group of gypsy musicians who become Aesop's allies, a beautiful woman who falls in love with Katmandu, and a pair of eccentric scientists who are studying the nature of light and color.

The Rainbow Thief is a visually stunning film, with lush, vivid colors and breathtaking scenery. The story is both whimsical and dark, with a sense of humor that is at times absurd, and at other times biting. The film explores themes of greed, obsession, and the power of nature, as well as the innate human desire to possess something unique and beautiful.

The performances in the film are all top-notch, particularly those of Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif. O'Toole brings a sense of gravitas and sophistication to his role as McNair, while Sharif is alternately charming and enigmatic as Aesop. Christopher Lee is also excellent as the butler, providing some much-needed comic relief to the otherwise serious tone of the film.

Overall, The Rainbow Thief is a unique and engaging film that is sure to delight those with a taste for the unconventional. It is a film that defies categorization, existing somewhere between fantasy, drama, and comedy. While it may not be for everyone, those who give it a chance are likely to be rewarded with an experience they won't soon forget.
