The film entitled The Snapper is about the experiences and adventures of the Curley family. Sharon is 20 years old at the time and she lives with her parents alongside her brothers and sisters. Sharon gets pregnant after an encounter with a man whom she hates so much at a bar one night. She refuses to reveal to anyone not even her family members who the father of her unborn baby is. Everybody in the town including her friends, employers and colleagues are all talking about Sharon’s situation. Despite the disagreements in the family about the situation, all the members of her family decide to stand by her and give her the necessary support she needs in different ways. While pregnant, Sharon resorts to drinking alcohol as a way to release the stress she is going through. She gets teased all the time by her brothers and sisters and it is during this period of trial for her that she realizes who her true and loyal friends are. Sharon’s father Des Curley is in a state of utter confusion. He is so angry at Sharon for disgracing the family by getting pregnant at such a tender age without being married. He also pities the young girl who is going through a lot already and living with the consequences of her actions, especially as he watches her struggling to deal with the pressure from friends, colleagues and employers. In his own way he tries to help her stay positive and prepare to receive the baby in a few months when she will be due. As the time draws nearer people start speculating who the father of the baby could possibly be. Not long after, Sharon gives birth to her baby Snapper and this ends all the troubles and speculations. Everyone is shocked to learn that Burgess, the father of Sharon’s friend, is responsible. He took advantage of Sharon while she was drunk and got her pregnant. The film was directed by Stephen Frears and edited by Mick Audsley.
