Watch Passion Fish

Passion Fish is a 1992 film directed by John Sayles and starring Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard, and Angela Bassett. The story revolves around a soap opera actress, May-Alice Culhane (played by McDonnell), who is left paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident. She returns to her family's home in Louisiana to recover, but finds that her old friends and family members cannot accept her physical disability. Feeling hopeless and alone, she hires a local nurse, Chantelle (played by Woodard), to take care of her.

Woodard is equally impressive as the tough and compassionate Chantelle, who sees beyond May-Alice's initial brusqueness to the person underneath. Bassett shines in a supporting role as May-Alice's soap opera co-star and friend, who offers an outsider's perspective on the situation.

Passion Fish received critical acclaim upon its release and was nominated for several awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Woodard. It is a moving and poignant film that explores the human condition with warmth, humor, and compassion.
