Watch The Vanishing
- 1 hr 47 min
Jeff and Diane take a trip for the weekend. They are in love but argue a lot. They stop at a convenience store to take a short break. Jeff goes to the bathroom. When he returns to the car, Diane is missing. He waits for her a bit then realizes something is wrong. He calls the police. The police arrive and question him. They ask him if the couple had been arguing. He says yes but that the argument was not something that would make her run away. The police are not so sure. There's a chance that she left him on purpose. He spends the next years of his life trying to find her. He conducts his own investigations. He solicits help from the media. No trace of Diane ever materializes. With time, he meets another woman named Rita. They have a connection and begin a relationship. Jeff says he loves her, but Rita discovers a shrine to Diane. The shrine is not really one of love. Instead, it shows the obsession Jeff has developed about finding the truth of what happened to Diane. A parallel story runs through the film about Barney. He is an odd fellow but a family man. He saves his daughter's friend from drowning in a swimming pool. He becomes her hero. Barney crumbles under the weight of this adoration. In his confused mind, he decides he needs to do something equally evil in life to counterbalance this noble deed. He decides to kill someone. The person he chooses at random happens to be Diane. Years after the crime, when he sees Jeff crying on television saying he only wants to know what happened to her, he takes it to heart. He agrees to show Jeff on one condition: that he experience everything exactly as Diane experienced it that night.
