The Wiz - is a revamped Broadway play, with an all African American cast. Directed by John Bedhan and Produced by Motown Productions in conjunction with Universal Pictures, the movie version was created. Its extravagance was the first of its kind, with a star studded cast of who's who, of African American entertainers. Diana Ross plays Dorothy a Harlem, New York, school teacher. Nipsey Russel plays "The Tin Man" who needs a heart and Michael Jackson sings and dances as the "The Scarecrow". Lena Horne, star of film and stage is "Glenda the Good witch" and Richard Pryor comedian and actor is "The Wiz". This cast brings this movie to life, with brilliance, glitz and glamour that the play version did not. The movie opens with the family celebrating Thanksgiving, then suddenly Dorothy's dog Toto tears out of the house when the door is opened. Dorothy chases the dog, only to be caught in a magical snow storm. She lands in the Kingdom of Oz, wearing magical shoes that only she can remove. Glenda the Good Witch tells her to follow the Yellow brick road to find her destiny. This is where she meets the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man with her dog Toto in toe. The quartet of fast friends all band together in search of the Oz. They believe, the Oz has the power to grant them all their wishes. Dorothy's wish to get home where she feels safe and secure. Prior to this adventure, she had never been out of Harlem. As they travel the yellow brick road, they come across all kinds of worldly obstacles. Finally, arriving in Oz they meet the Wiz. Only to discover the Wiz is fraud. He does not have the power to grant their wishes. Glenda the Good witch explains to them, they already have what they were in search of inside of themselves.
