In the movie Thin Ice from 2011, we meet Mickey, played by Greg Kinnear, a desperate insurance salesman who is struggling to make ends meet. Broke and in debt, he stumbles upon an accidental opportunity to get his hands on a large sum of money. Mickey poses as an antique collector and manipulates an elderly farmer, Gorvy, played by Alan Arkin, into selling him a rare violin. However, things take a dark turn when a shifty handyman, Randy, played by Billy Crudup, enters the picture and wants a piece of the pie too.

As Mickey's lies start to unravel, he finds himself caught in a web of deceit, murder, and deception. With the stolen violin in hand, he begins to hatch a plan that will change his life forever.

The plot is full of twists and turns, leaving the audience guessing until the very end. The cinematography is stunning with the bleak winter landscape of Wisconsin providing a perfect backdrop for this edgy crime thriller.

Greg Kinnear brings a great deal of nuance to his performance as Mickey, portraying him as a desperate man who is pushed to the brink of the law. He captures the character's vulnerability and inner turmoil effectively, highlighting his progression from a somewhat likable underdog to a calculating and somewhat ruthless mastermind.

Billy Crudup, on the other hand, is simply fantastic in his role as Randy, the scruffy and mysterious handyman. The character is unconventional, unpredictable and charming, his cool composure offsetting the frenetic energy of the other characters in the movie. He is one of those actors, who adds a lot of depth and intrigue to any film he is a part of.

Alan Arkin, too, is excellent, bringing his ever-reliable gravitas to the role of Gorvy, the aging farmer. He is seen as a relic of a bygone era, but his shrewdness and perspicacity make him a force to be reckoned with.

Thin Ice is a movie that showcases the darker side of human nature. The story is smartly written and well executed, with director Jill Sprecher managing to strike the right balance between suspense and humor. The twists and turns in the narrative keep the audience engaged throughout.

Overall, Thin Ice is a highly underrated gem that deserves more recognition. With a talented cast delivering fantastic performances, a gripping storyline, and a beautiful setting - this movie is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good thriller.

Thin Ice is a 2012 comedy. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 60.
