Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken is the story of a young runaway named Sonora Webster. This story takes place during the great depression. Sonora has always had a dream of running away to fascinating Atlantic City where she is sure all of her dreams will come true; it’s not very long before she realizes that this is not going to be as easy as she thought. Not long after arriving in Atlantic City, Sonora meets Dr. Carver, who runs a girl-and-horse diving show, where she takes a job as a table hand. But this is not enough; Sonora wants to be a diving girl. Dr. Carver’s son Al agrees to help Sonora train to become a diving girl even though everyone has told her that she is just too small to be able to do it. It is not too long before the show’s diving girl Marie is injured and Sonora soon becomes the star of the show; however she had started to fall for Al who left suddenly after a fight with his father. Dr. Carver passes away and Al is forced to come back to run his show and this is when he confesses his love to Sonora and asks for her hand in marriage. Everything is going great for Sonora and it seems that she has finally made it and gotten where she wants to be, then one day her horse, Lightning, is spooked during a dive and because of this Sonora makes a mistake that leaves her completely blind. Al refuses to let her jump anymore and even brings back Marie as the headliner of the show because the show must go on. Sonora will not accept that her career is over and works very hard until she is able to do everything that she could before and is able to ride again however Al will have none of it because he is worried that she will get hurt. At the end Sonora locks Marie in her trailer and takes her place. She manages to perform a perfect jump without anyone in the audience even having a clue that she is blind.
