The movie You Don't Know Jack is a docudrama telling the story of Dr. Jack Kevorkian (Al Pacino), a pathologist that was an active and avid supporter in doctor assisted suicide. Assisted by his sister Margo Janus (Brenda Vaccaro), close friend Neal Nicol (John Goodman). Dr. Kevorkian also had the support of Janet Good (Susan Sarandon), head of the local Hemlock Society, and supporter of planned suicide. Mrs. Good also came to be one of the doctors patients when she developed pancreatic cancer and it was incurable. Dr. Kevorkian a Michigan based pathologist assisted in the suicides of over 100 patients with debilitating diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer's, and MS. The movie shows how the doctor and his friends documented, interviewed and showed the patients how to use the equipment he provided for them to end their own lives. The prosecutors failed four times in convicting him and he was taken to trial a fifth time after he was interviewed on the television news show 60 Minutes which broadcasted one of the deaths Dr.Kevorkian assisted in. The film explored who the doctor was a renaissance man that was an artist, painter, author, and played instruments. The movie tells the story in an unbiased fashion that does not tell the viewer how they should feel but rather allows them to make their own decision about Dr. Kevorkian. The movie was directed by Barry Levinson and written by Adam Mazer. The movie received many nominations such as from the Screen Actors Guild where Susan Sarandon and John Goodman were both nominated for outstanding performances in a miniseries while Al Pacino who was also nominated won that award. Nominations also were given from the Primetime Emmy Awards, The Golden Globes and many others.
