In A Lull in the Sea season 1 episode 2, titled "The Chilly Desert," the story continues to follow four main characters, Hikari, Manaka, Chisaki, and Kaname, as they navigate life in a small seaside village known as Shioshishio. The episode picks up where the last one left off, with the villagers performing a ritual to commemorate the start of a new school year.
As the kids head off to school, they meet a new transfer student named Tsumugu. Unlike the others, Tsumugu is from the surface world and has moved to Shioshishio with his grandfather, who is a fisherman. Tsumugu is immediately intrigued by Hikari, Manaka, Chisaki, and Kaname, and tries to get to know them better. However, he quickly realizes that they are different from the other children in the village, and they don't seem to be very interested in making friends with him.
Meanwhile, the sea god, who watches over Shioshishio, decides to test the village's residents by making the sea water very cold. The temperature drops so low that it becomes difficult for people to swim in, and the fish start to disappear. This causes panic throughout the village, and the residents start to wonder if they have angered the sea god in some way.
As the crisis deepens, Hikari, Manaka, Chisaki, and Kaname realize that they need to do something to help the village. They remember a legend about a "fish catcher" who can lure fish to the surface, and they decide to go searching for this mysterious person. Along the way, they meet an old man who teaches them how to gather food in the cold water. They also encounter Tsumugu, who proves to be very helpful in their search for the fish catcher.
Eventually, they find the fish catcher, who turns out to be a young girl named Sayu. Sayu lives alone in a cave and has the ability to make fish surfaces, but she refuses to share her knowledge with anyone. Hikari, Manaka, Chisaki, and Kaname try to convince her to help the village, but she is stubborn and maintains that the sea god is punishing the villagers for their past mistakes.
As tensions rise, Hikari has a confrontation with Tsumugu, who he blames for causing the sea god's anger due to his status as a surface dweller. Tsumugu tries to reason with Hikari and convince him that they are all in this together, but Hikari is too upset to listen.
In the end, the villagers come together and realize that their past mistakes have caused the sea god's anger. They agree to work together to take care of the sea and avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Sayu also agrees to help them, and the water gradually starts to warm up again.
Overall, "The Chilly Desert" is an episode that focuses on the theme of learning to work together to overcome crises. It also introduces a new character, Tsumugu, who plays an important role in helping Hikari, Manaka, Chisaki, and Kaname accomplish their goal. With stunning animation, compelling characters, and an engaging storyline, A Lull in the Sea continues to captivate audiences with this exciting episode.
