After the Rain Season 1 Episode 1 - The Sound of Rain
The first episode of After the Rain introduces viewers to Akira Tachibana, a high school student who is recovering from a career-ending injury that leaves her unable to participate in the sports she loves. Feeling lonely and lost, Akira spends most of her time working part-time at a family restaurant as a way to distract herself from her situation.
During one particularly rainy day, Akira finds herself taking cover in a local bookstore. It is there that she encounters Masami Kondou, a man around her age who works as the manager of the store. Despite his kind demeanor, Akira can't help but feel a hint of attraction towards him.
The two strike up a conversation about books and music, and Akira finds herself drawn to Masami's calming presence. However, before she can make a move, the rain clears up and Akira has to return to her job at the restaurant.
As the episode progresses, we see glimpses of Akira's past as a track and field star, showcasing her dedication and drive as an athlete. Her injury, however, has left her feeling directionless and unsure of what her future holds. She finds solace in talking to her best friend Haruka, who works at the same restaurant as her.
Throughout the episode, we also see Masami struggling with his own issues. Despite being a talented writer, he struggles to find the motivation to finish his book and often finds himself getting sidetracked by his own thoughts and daydreams. Despite this, he remains kind and patient towards Akira, who finds herself becoming more and more infatuated with him.
The Sound of Rain is a slow-burning, character-driven episode that sets up the foundation for the relationship between Akira and Masami. It is clear that both characters are feeling lost and searching for something to hold on to, whether it be each other or their own passions. The rain serves as a metaphor for the characters' emotional states, with Akira finding herself drowning in her own sorrows while Masami remains stuck in a stagnant state.
Overall, The Sound of Rain is a solid start to After the Rain, offering a glimpse into the complex lives of its main characters and setting up the tone for the rest of the series. Fans of slow-burning, character-driven dramas will surely find something to enjoy in this first episode.
