Tenchi Masaki is a high school student who moves to the rural town of Okayama to live with his grandfather after his mother passes away. One day, while exploring the nearby forest, he comes across a strange shrine and accidentally awakens a sleeping goddess named Ryoko. She introduces herself as a space pirate who has been imprisoned for 700 years and tells Tenchi that she is on a mission to find the legendary treasure known as the "Light Hawk Wings."
As they leave the shrine, they encounter a group of girls who all seem to be interested in Tenchi. They introduce themselves as Tenchi's new classmates and one of them, a pink-haired girl named Momo, enthusiastically invites him to join their school's cultural festival committee. Tenchi agrees to join and they all head back to the school to begin their work.
Once they arrive at the school, Tenchi discovers that he will be living in the same dorm as the girls and that they all have unique personalities and abilities. One is a skilled martial artist, another is a genius inventor, and another has the ability to communicate with aquatic animals.
As Tenchi begins to settle into his new life, he is also haunted by strange dreams about a girl named Haruna who he has never met before. He is determined to find out the truth behind these dreams and decides to explore the forest once again. This time, however, he is confronted by a mysterious girl who looks exactly like the girl from his dreams. She introduces herself as Haruna and tells Tenchi that she has been waiting for him.
Overall, the first episode of Ai Tenchi Muyo sets up an intriguing premise with a diverse cast of characters and hints at a larger mystery surrounding Tenchi's past and the supernatural forces at play in the town of Okayama. The animation is colorful and energetic, and the humor and character interactions are enjoyable. Fans of the original Tenchi Muyo anime will likely appreciate the show's return to its roots, while newcomers may find themselves intrigued by the show's unique blend of sci-fi and harem anime tropes.
