James is feeling rather lonely and unmotivated as he waits for his registration from the Royal Veterinary College to come through. Tristan is creeping round the house like a ghost; he too, is waiting - for his girlfriend Barbara's letter in response to his proposal of marriage. However, the forthcoming of arrivals lightens the atmosphere: Mrs. Hall's sister invites her to London for a few days, and before long sieges the Farnons with the responsibility of her husband Tom, and 17 stone of inseparable, snoring dog called Clancy. And then there is Miss Harbottle - a fearsome woman who is a great client of the surgery. She is a stickler for routine, and any deviation from her strict schedule can cause a major crisis. She is frantic with worry when her beloved dog Angus becomes ill; James realises that the only solution is to bring the Kennedys' dog Tricki Woo to sleep with Angus for a few nights. James is delighted when Mrs. Hall returns, having passed on to him all of her knowledge for handling Tom and Clancy. As for Tricki and Angus - they quickly settle into a loving relationship and are soon causing havoc around the surgery at night...
