James deals with personal issues while his professional life brings him face to face with death. The episode opens with Tristan, James' brother, stumbling in after a night of heavy drinking. Tristan confesses that he’s been feeling lost lately and that he’s not sure if he wants to be a vet. James tells him that he needs to pull himself together and be grateful for the opportunities they have been given.

As the brothers leave for work, they encounter Mrs. Pumphrey, who is concerned about her Pekingese, Tricki Woo, who seems to have developed an illness. James assures her that Tricki Woo's condition is not life-threatening and spells out a more appropriate diet for him.

Later that day, Ingleby, a farmer, asks James to put down one of his cows. James examines the animal and realizes that she is suffering from a serious illness that is affecting the whole herd. The only option is to cull the entire herd, which will be a devastating blow for Ingleby. James has to break the news to the farmer and help him come to terms with the loss of his livelihood.

Meanwhile, James is struggling with his own personal crisis. He’s been seeing Helen, a farmer's daughter, for some time now, but he's unsure if he's ready to commit to a serious relationship. Siegfried, James’ boss and mentor, offers him some sage advice. He tells James that he needs to follow his heart and not to be afraid of making mistakes.

Despite his own worries, James remains focused on his patients. He is called to attend to a sick horse belonging to Mrs. Hall, the housekeeper at Skeldale House. Upon arrival, James discovers that the horse is gravely ill and needs to be put down. Mrs. Hall is emotional and distraught over the loss of her beloved animal.

Tristan, who has been feeling down and disconnected from his work, is inspired by James' professionalism and passion for his job. He tells James that he has decided that he wants to pursue a career as a vet after all.

In the final scene, James visits Helen at her farm and confesses his feelings for her. She appears to feel the same way, and the episode ends on a hopeful note.

Overall, "Advice and Consent" is a moving and heartfelt episode that deals with themes of love, loss, and the difficult decisions that come with being a veterinarian. While there are some heartbreaking moments, the episode ultimately leaves viewers feeling uplifted and optimistic.
