Backwash is an experimental comedy series streaming on Crackle Originals. It follows the misadventures of two friends, Rob and Ben, who work at a wastewater treatment plant in a small town. Though they're in their thirties, they're anything but responsible adults, spending most of their time goofing off and engaging in immature antics.

The show is filmed in a mockumentary style, with characters frequently breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly. This creates a sense of intimacy between the viewer and the characters, almost like we're friends with them ourselves.

The first episode sets the tone for the series, as Rob and Ben accidentally release a massive sewage spill in the town's drinking water. The ensuing chaos is played for laughs, as the incompetent duo try to cover up their mistake while avoiding getting fired.

Despite the absurdity of the premise, Backwash manages to balance its humor with a surprising amount of heart. The friendship between Rob and Ben is genuinely touching at times, and the show explores the nuances of their relationship in a way that feels authentic. It's clear that they care about each other, even if they express it through insults and practical jokes.

The supporting cast is also a delight, with standout performances from Kayode Ewumi as their uptight boss Mr. Hackett, and Jamie Demetriou as a slacker coworker named Clive. They inject some much-needed sanity into Rob and Ben's chaotic lives, as well as providing a comedic counterpoint to their antics.

Another strength of the show is its visual style. The cinematography and editing are both top-notch, and the use of music and sound design is particularly effective. It all adds up to a unique and immersive viewing experience that feels unlike anything else on TV right now.

That's not to say the show is perfect, of course. Some of the jokes land better than others, and there are moments where the humor feels too goofy or juvenile for its own good. Additionally, the mockumentary format can sometimes feel limiting, as it relies heavily on talking head interviews to convey information.

Despite these minor flaws, Backwash is a standout series that's well worth checking out for fans of offbeat comedy. It's funny, touching, and visually stunning, with a cast of characters you can't help but love despite their flaws. Whether you're in the mood for a good belly laugh or just want to escape into a refreshingly weird world, this show has got you covered.
