The show "Barnwood Builders" follows a group of master craftsmen who scour the countryside for historic barns and log cabins to salvage and restore. In season 3 episode 11, entitled "Barnwood Casserole," the team faces a unique challenge when they come across a dilapidated 1800s log cabin that has been transformed into a makeshift casserole restaurant.
Upon arrival, team leader Mark Bowe quickly realizes that the cabin has been extensively modified, with walls removed and a commercial kitchen installed. Despite the drastic changes, the crew is determined to salvage as much of the original structure as possible.
The team begins by carefully dismantling the modern additions and removing layers of insulation and drywall to reveal the original logs. As they work, they discover that the cabin has a unique dovetail design that was common in the area during the 19th century.
With the help of heavy machinery, the team carefully removes the logs and loads them onto trucks for transport back to their West Virginia workshop. Once there, the logs are graded and sorted, with any damaged pieces removed.
The crew then begins the process of restoring the logs, carefully chiseling and sanding away decades of grime and graying. They use traditional methods to repair any damaged areas and carefully fit the logs back together, recreating the original dovetail joints as they go.
As the restoration nears completion, the team turns their attention to creating a modern space that complements the historic cabin. They install new windows and doors using reclaimed materials, and build a new wrap-around porch to provide outdoor seating for customers.
Inside, the crew installs a handcrafted bar and custom tables made from salvaged barn wood. They also install a striking stone fireplace as the centerpiece of the dining room, which will be used to cook the restaurant's signature casserole dishes.
Throughout the process, the team faces unexpected challenges and setbacks, including inclement weather and unexpected repairs. But their determination and expertise allow them to overcome these obstacles and create a stunning new space that honors the cabin's rich history while also serving as a modern dining destination.
In the end, the team has successfully transformed a dilapidated log cabin into a thriving casserole restaurant, showcasing the enduring beauty and resilience of historic structures and the skill and dedication of those who work to preserve them.
