Ep 1. Mabel

Jimmy's back, and he's not taking any more nonsense. Better Call Saul Season 3 episode 1, "Mabel," is a tense and thrilling reintroduction to the titular character. The episode opens with a dream sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the season: this is going to be a wild ride.

As always, Bob Odenkirk is at his best as Jimmy. He's got a twinkle in his eye and a quick wit that serves him well, whether he's dealing with shady characters or trying to smooth over a misunderstanding with his girlfriend. And while we know Jimmy will eventually become Saul Goodman, for now he's still a lovable rogue trying to make his way in the world.

One aspect of the show that's always stood out is the cinematography and editing. "Mabel" is no exception. From the opening shots of the desert to the final scenes in a courthouse, every shot is carefully composed and edited to maximum effect. The show is a masterclass in how to tell a story visually.

While Jimmy is the star of the show, the supporting cast is just as strong. There are too many to name them all, but Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut, Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, and Michael McKean as Chuck McGill are all standouts. It's a testament to the writing that even the most minor characters feel fully fleshed out and essential to the story.

The plot of "Mabel" revolves around Jimmy's attempts to win back the trust of his brother, Chuck. Chuck is a senior partner at the law firm where Jimmy works, and he's always been wary of his younger brother's flashy style and lack of respect for the law. In season 2, Jimmy cut a few ethical corners to win a case, and Chuck has never quite forgiven him.

Without giving too much away, "Mabel" sees Jimmy trying to make amends and get back in Chuck's good graces. But there are obstacles in his way, including an unexpected visit from an old acquaintance and a potentially career-ending mistake by one of the firm's partners.

As usual, the show does an excellent job of balancing the personal and professional lives of its characters. We get to see Jimmy and Kim's relationship develop, as well as Mike's ongoing struggle to protect his granddaughter. But at the same time, the show never loses sight of the fact that these are all lawyers and criminals, and there are high stakes involved in everything they do.

One thing that sets Better Call Saul apart from other shows is its attention to detail. Whether it's the way a character speaks or the logo on a sign in the background, every element of the show feels carefully considered. "Mabel" is no exception. From the opening shot of a discarded cigarette butt to the final scene in a darkened office, every detail adds to the sense of tension and unease.

Ultimately, "Mabel" is a strong start to the season. It sets up a number of intriguing storylines and raises the stakes for all the characters involved. It's an episode that will have fans of the show hooked from the first minute.
