After a brief hiatus, Boston Legal has returned with its fourteenth episode of season 4, named Rescue Me. This episode starts with the lawyers at Crane, Poole and Schmidt operating under severe pressure, with a massive senior partnership review set to take place soon. Complementing this tension is the ongoing ethical issues lurking above the firm- ranging from workplace relationships to hiring practices, making the lawyers uncertain about their positions in the firm.

In this episode, some of the main characters’ pasts and personal lives take center stage. Denny faces several challenges, including a health issue, an addiction struggle, and a more significant institutional challenge. This spins him off into a well-deserved personal retreat with some lighthearted fun, but the episode balances these moments with the heavier issues concerning him.

Meanwhile, Lori Colson, an attractive member of the team, gets into a romantic entanglement with Carl, who manages the firm's mailroom, and a conflict brews when this forbidden romantic relationship comes to light. This conversation brings about a bigger conversation regarding how Crane, Poole and Schmidt delegate workplaces relationships and the subsequent challenges that arise.

Meanwhile, Shirley Schmidt, one of the senior partners, has her share of drama in this episode. Her grandchild, Sierra, is dealing with financial stress in her bid for college and her father is notably absent in her life. This forces Shirley to take matters into her own hands, but this is easier said than done. Her attempts to help her grandchild prove to be more complicated than she imagines.

Elsewhere in the episode, Alan Shore is hired to represent Denny in an unexpected legal issue, and he brings his brand of audacity to the case, risking friendship and reputations in the process. Paul Lewiston is left to juggle the consequences of Alan's legal embarrassments with Denny's growing frustration over his legal issue. Carl Sack, one of the new partners at Crane, Poole and Schmidt, has his hands full with some high dollar litigation, and his approach to this case puts him at odds with his team members.

In this episode, the legal issues are wide-ranging and thought-provoking, ranging from discussions of “rescue” ethics in the medical industry to the legal implications of workplace romance.

One of the strengths of Boston Legal is its ability to handle heavy topics without becoming too heavy-handed or ponderous, and this episode is no exception to that. The writing is strong, witty, and clever, and the writers are skilled at making social commentary while still delivering compelling episodes that keep the audience fully engaged.

Overall, Boston Legal's season 4 episode 14, Rescue Me, is an exceptional example of the show's strengths, with a compelling storyline that is both socially relevant and emotionally engaging, with excellent performances all around by the talented cast. Whether you are a fan of the show or a newcomer, this episode is not to be missed.
