Karasuma Chihaya has always dreamt of becoming the best karuta player in Japan. Her passion for the game reignites after meeting Arata, an incredibly talented player who introduces her to a world of intense competition and teamwork. In season 1 episode 18, titled The Plum Blossoms Still Smell the Same, Chihaya and her team prepare for the upcoming Tokyo Regional Qualifiers.

The episode opens with Chihaya and Taichi practicing together, focusing on their strengths and weaknesses. Chihaya is determined to improve her game after losing to Yumi Yamamoto, a skilled player who uses chihayafuru poems about flowers to distract her opponents. She seeks advice from Dr. Harada, who teaches her how to better read her opponent's movements and anticipate their plays.

Meanwhile, the other members of the Mizusawa High karuta club are also working hard to improve their skills. Kana is practicing her recitations, while Tsutomu is analyzing data on rival teams. Even Porky, who has traditionally been the weakest member, shows signs of improvement thanks to his hard work and determination.

As the Tokyo Regional Qualifiers draw near, tensions rise within the team. Chihaya is worried about competing against Yumi again, while Taichi is anxious about facing his old friend and rival, Arata. The team tries to lift each other's spirits, but they all know that the competition will be tough.

The day of the qualifiers arrives, and the Mizusawa team is determined to give it their all. Chihaya faces off against Yumi once again, but this time she is more focused and prepared. She manages to win the match, thanks to her improved technique and ability to stay calm under pressure.

Taichi, on the other hand, struggles in his match against Arata. Despite putting up a valiant effort, he ultimately loses to his former friend and rival. However, he remains determined to keep playing and improving, as he knows that the journey to becoming a top karuta player is a long and challenging one.

In the end, the Mizusawa team manages to qualify for the next round of competition. They celebrate their victory, but also know that they have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to make it to the national championships. As they head home, they notice the beautiful plum blossoms blooming in the park and are reminded that even though things may change, some things, like their passion for karuta, remain the same.

Overall, The Plum Blossoms Still Smell the Same is a heartwarming and inspiring episode that showcases the hard work and dedication of the Mizusawa High karuta club. It highlights the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and the love of the game, and sets the stage for even more intense competition in the episodes to come.
