Frances is in deep contemplation after telling her husband Robert that she wants a divorce. As she sits in her lawyer's office, he reminds her of the prenuptial agreement she signed. The agreement clearly outlines that if a divorce were to happen, she would receive nothing. Frances is clearly out of sorts and is left wondering about her future.
Meanwhile, Robert is trying his best to act fine. He pretends to take it all in his stride and that he is not affected by the news. Most of the time, he is hiding his true feelings, and only his close friends can tell that he's struggling.
As the day progresses, both of them have to deal with the news. Frances' daughter is confused and hurt by the news of her parents' separation. She doesn't understand what is happening, and the fact that her parents aren't fighting makes it all the more difficult to comprehend. Despite this, Frances has been planning her future for a long time. She sees this as her chance to do what she's always wanted to do.
On the other end of the spectrum, Robert has no plans for his future. Everything he has is his marriage, and he is devastated by the thought of losing it. He goes to his best friend for advice and solace. His friend tells him about his past relationships and how he managed to move on. But Robert is skeptical and feels that it's not that simple.
Elsewhere, Frances is trying to sell a painting of theirs. The painting has been in their living room for a long time, and she sees it as a symbol of their old life that has now come to an end. The sale doesn't go as planned, and the interaction with the buyer leaves Frances feeling ashamed and insulted.
As the day drags on, both of them are forced to confront some harsh realities. Robert's mother pays a surprise visit at his office, and he is forced to tell her about the separation. His mother is devastated, which makes Robert feel even worse about the whole thing. Frances, on the other hand, takes a call from her brother. Her brother tells her about all the trouble with his own marriage, and how it's over. The conversation with him leaves Frances with a lot to think about.
The day ends with both of them on a completely different path. Frances, who was once a successful executive, decides to take a job as a gallery assistant. She sees this as her chance to start over and do something she's always loved. On the other hand, Robert is struggling to find his footing. He's still in denial about the whole thing and doesn't know what to do next.
The second episode of Divorce season 1 does an excellent job of exploring the aftermath of a divorce. It's just not about two people separating, but the people left behind and how they cope with the aftermath. We get to see how Frances and Robert deal with the news themselves along with their family, friends, and work colleagues. The show manages to strike a perfect balance between drama and humor. The storyline is engaging, and the acting is impressive. Overall, it's a great watch for anyone who loves a good character drama.
