In Drunk History season 6 episode 5 titled "Love," viewers are taken on a comedic and historically accurate journey through tales of romantic triumphs and tragedies. The episode begins with a retelling of the love story of John Adams and Abigail Smith, brought to life by the hilarious and drunken narration of comedian Aparna Nancherla. The story follows the couple's courtship and letters exchanged during John's time serving in the Continental Congress, and the challenges they faced during the early years of their marriage. The reenactment of their love story is heartwarming and humorous, with playful nods to the complexities of their relationship.

The next story is narrated by comedian Rich Fulcher, who dives into the life and love of famed novelist Ernest Hemingway and his third wife, journalist Martha Gellhorn. Hemingway's affairs are well-known, but this episode focuses on how he met Gellhorn while on vacation in Key West, Florida, and how their shared passion for storytelling ultimately led to their marriage. Their love was not without its challenges, however, and Fulcher's drunken narration brings to light some of the struggles that the couple faced during their tumultuous relationship.

Comedian and writer Amber Ruffin takes over the storytelling duties for the next segment, which focuses on the groundbreaking love story of Richard and Mildred Loving. The Lovings were an interracial couple who, in the early 1960s, found themselves at the center of a landmark Supreme Court case that ultimately struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Ruffin's narration takes viewers through the Lovings' journey, from falling in love as teenagers in rural Virginia to their Supreme Court victory and the impact it had on civil rights across the country.

The final story of the episode is narrated by comedian and actor Joel Kim Booster, who tells the tale of the love between Hollywood icons Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors. Both men were beloved stars during the 1960s and 70s, but the public was mostly unaware of their romantic relationship until Hudson's AIDS diagnosis in the 1980s. Booster's narration explores the couple's relationship and the challenges they faced in keeping it hidden from the public eye, as well as the impact that Hudson's diagnosis had on the broader conversation around the AIDS epidemic.

Throughout "Love," the stories are presented with a comedic and irreverent tone that is both entertaining and informative. The performances in the reenactments are well-crafted and at times surprisingly moving, bringing to life some of history's most iconic couples in a fresh and engaging way. By the end of the episode, viewers will likely gain a deeper appreciation for the power of love, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
