In the comedy series Dummy, a young writer struggles with writer's block. In the middle of her desperate search for inspiration, she discovers that her boyfriend has a sex doll. Even more shockingly, she discovers that the sex doll can talk, but she's the only one that can hear the doll's voice. In a zany twist, Cody decides to take the doll home with her in the hope that the new companion will help her to start writing again. The problem is, the doll has a plan of its own, and the plan is not likely to work out well for Cody. The high-concept comedy was conceived by writer Cody Heller. The idea was based on her own real-life experience when she found out that her boyfriend had a sex doll. The series was originally conceived as a TV sitcom pilot, but it was not picked up by any potential content platforms. The next step in the development of the project was converting the TV series content to a feature film. Finally, the film idea was broken into a series of brief vignettes for inclusion on the Quibi short-form video streaming platform. The series has received broadly negative reviews from critics. Complaints have included the criticism that the concept relies too heavily on a single absurd joke. Critics were also generally skeptical of the short Quibi episodes, which reportedly disrupted the flow of the story.
