After a strange and inexplicable experience on her solo mission in space, astronaut Molly Woods returns to Earth and finds out that she’s pregnant. The thing is, she’s been on the station for 13 months, so the pregnancy is an impossibility. In the second episode of season 1 titled “Extinct,” Molly finds herself dealing with the aftermath of her strange experience and the difficulties of being a new mother.

Molly, now back on Earth, is still trying to make sense of what happened to her on the space station. She meets with psychiatrist Sam Barton to discuss her experiences and is still very much in denial about her pregnancy. She believes it’s impossible, but the evidence is there. She’s pregnant, and she doesn’t know how it happened.

Meanwhile, Molly’s husband John is struggling to deal with the fallout from her return. He’s been cheating on her with his assistant Julie, and while he insists that the affair is over, he’s clearly still conflicted. Julie, for her part, seems to be interested in more than just a casual fling, and John is struggling to navigate this new territory.

Back at the Humanics project, Yasumoto and his team are still investigating Molly’s pregnancy. They’re alarmed by what they’ve seen so far; namely, that the fetus appears to be growing at an incredible rate. While Yasumoto is initially excited by the potential of this phenomenon, he’s also worried about what it could mean for the future of humanity.

As the episode progresses, Molly begins to experience strange hallucinations, which she initially believes are related to her trauma from her time in space. However, as the hallucinations become increasingly vivid, Molly starts to suspect that they might be something more. She turns to Sam for help, and he suggests that she undergo hypnotherapy to try and uncover any repressed memories.

At the same time, John and Julie grow closer, and John continues to struggle with his feelings for her. However, their affair is cut short when Yasumoto steps in and warns John that the consequences of his actions could be dire. Yasumoto tells John that if he wants to keep his job, he needs to end things with Julie immediately.

As the episode reaches its climax, Molly’s visions begin to take on a more ominous tone. She sees images of a man in a space suit who seems to be following her and a spindly alien creature that appears to be observing her. At the same time, the Humanics team makes a shocking discovery about Molly’s pregnancy, and Yasumoto is forced to confront the potential consequences of his actions.

Throughout “Extinct,” Extant keeps things tense and suspenseful, as we watch Molly, John, and Yasumoto all struggle to deal with the implications of Molly’s strange experience in space. The episode is filled with plenty of twists and turns, and each character is given ample time to shine. It’s a great follow-up to the pilot, setting up an intriguing mystery that we can’t wait to see unravel over the course of the season.
