- 4 Seasons
Torchwood is an adult-oriented spin-off of the BBC's reboot of the long-running, family-friendly show, Doctor Who. The show follows the work of the Torchwood Institute, an extra-governmental organization created by Queen Victoria in 1879. The institute's main job is to protect the British Empire from aliens. To do this, the Institute finds and uses alien technology, some of which they don't fully understand. Torchwood is set in the present day and centers on the Institute's Cardiff office, also known as Torchwood Three, run by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman): an immortal alien from the 51st century who found his way to Earth and the 21st century with the help of The Doctor and Rose Tyler. Together with Owen Harper (Burn Gorman), Tashiko Sato (Naoko Mori), Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), Captain Jack deals with alien incursions, time travelers and rogue agents in his attempts to prepare the citizens of Earth for the big changes he knows are coming in the 21st century. The show was created by Russell T. Davies. It premiered on 22 October 2006 on the BBC and was produced by BBC Wales and the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC). Torchwood had two full regular seasons and two mini-series events, "Children of Earth" and "Miracle Day." In addition to the television show, the history and activities of the Torchwood Institute can be followed in the official Torchwood BBC Radio audio presentations and tie-in novels. Torchwood features graphic sexual situations (both gay and straight), as well as frequent use of profanity, suggestive dialogue and violence and may not be suitable for children.
