Domyoji proves to be a difficult companion, however, belittling Makino at every opportunity and acting like a spoiled child.

Things then take a turn for the worse when Domyoji insists on taking Makino to the beach. While there, he takes her through a dangerous cave, and they get stuck in the middle. In the heat of the moment, Domyoji leans in for a kiss, which Makino is not ready for. She manages to push him away, and they escape the cave, both shaken up.

The rest of the episode sees Makino struggling to come to terms with what happened on the date and how she feels about Domyoji. At school the next day, Domyoji acts like nothing happened, which only adds to Makino's confusion. She then confides in her friend, Yuriko, who advises her to stay away from him and focus on her studies.

Overall, Hana Yori Dango season 1 episode 2 shows the strain that comes with being a student in an elite school and having to navigate relationships with people who come from completely different backgrounds.
