Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) continues her hunt for terrorist mastermind Al-Qatala, while also dealing with the aftermath of her recent miscarriage. In "Oriole," the seventh episode of the fifth season of "Homeland," Carrie finds herself in a dangerous situation as she tries to track down a key member of Al-Qatala. Meanwhile, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) tries to negotiate a deal with a former adversary, and Quinn (Rupert Friend) makes a decision that could have serious consequences.

The episode opens with Carrie meeting with an informant in a crowded marketplace in Lebanon. She is trying to get information on where the Al-Qatala leader Haissam Haqqani might be hiding, but the informant is hesitant to talk. Suddenly, a group of armed men approach the marketplace, and Carrie realizes that they are looking for her. She flees into the streets, chased by the men, and narrowly escapes by jumping into a car driven by Quinn.

As they leave Beirut, Quinn tells Carrie that he has decided to leave the CIA. Carrie is shocked, as she thought he had been getting better after suffering from PTSD in the previous season. Quinn explains that he has come to the realization that he can't keep doing this job, constantly risking his life, and that he needs to move on. Carrie tries to convince him to stay, but Quinn is adamant.

Back in the US, Saul meets with the Russian ambassador to discuss the situation in Syria. Saul was in charge of the CIA's operations in the Middle East before being demoted, and he has a complicated history with the Russian ambassador. After some tense negotiations, Saul is able to secure a deal to exchange a Russian spy for a Syrian prisoner. However, things don't go as planned when the prisoner is killed during the exchange, leading Saul to question the motives of his former adversary.

Meanwhile, Carrie and Quinn arrive in Germany, where they are met by a former contact of Carrie's named Jonas (Alexander Fehling). Jonas is a law professor who has agreed to help Carrie track down Al-Qatala's financial network. Carrie is hesitant to involve him, as she doesn't want to put him in danger, but Jonas insists on helping. They begin by trying to trace the money transfers of a known Al-Qatala member named Jabir. They manage to find a pattern of transfers that leads them to a small town in Germany.

Carrie and Jonas travel to the town and pose as a married couple looking to buy a house. They soon discover that the town is full of Al-Qatala sympathizers, and that Jabir is actually living there under a false identity. Carrie knows that they need to act fast, as Jabir is a key player in the organization and could have valuable information on Haqqani's whereabouts. She comes up with a risky plan to try to capture Jabir, but things quickly spiral out of control.

As Carrie and Jonas close in on Jabir's location, they are ambushed by a group of armed men. Jonas is shot and Carrie is taken hostage, leaving Quinn to come to her rescue. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Quinn infiltrates the building where Carrie is being held, setting the stage for an intense and action-packed conclusion to the season.

Overall, "Oriole" is a thrilling and suspenseful episode that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The performances by Danes, Patinkin, and Friend are all excellent, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their respective roles. The episode is also notable for its exploration of the mental and emotional toll that espionage takes on its agents, particularly Quinn, who is struggling with PTSD and the realization that he can no longer continue in his line of work.
