Honest Trailers Season 1 Episode 58 Honest Trailers - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
- May 27, 2014
In this episode of Honest Trailers, the team takes a comical dive into the world of Disney's live-action remake of Alice in Wonderland. The narrator starts off by mentioning how this version claims to be the sequel to the original story, leading to some confusion about whether this meant Alice was hallucinating the entire time or if she had really gone to Wonderland as a child.
The trailer then goes on to roast the over-the-top CGI effects present throughout the film, pointing out the weirdly proportioned animals and bizarre landscapes that seem to exist for no other reason than to be visually stunning. The narrator also brings attention to the movie's initial marketing campaign which involved Johnny Depp's character, the Mad Hatter, being plastered all over billboards and merchandise despite his relatively minor role in the story.
The Honest Trailer crew doesn't stop there, however. They take jabs at the movie's numerous side plots which seem to have no real purpose, including Alice's impending arranged marriage and struggles with sexism in the workplace. They also poke fun at the film's cast, pointing out how little screen time Anne Hathaway's White Queen actually has and how awkwardly Mia Wasikowska delivers her lines as Alice.
But perhaps the biggest criticism of the movie comes in the form of the narrator's frustration with how poorly it handles the source material. He complains that characters like the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit are relegated to mere sidekicks, while the plot seems to completely ignore important story elements like the Caterpillar and the Jabberwocky. At one point, the narrator even suggests that the movie is more of a Tim Burton movie than it is a proper adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
Despite all its flaws, however, the Honest Trailer team still find some things to enjoy about the film. They praise Alan Rickman's performance as the Caterpillar and admit that some of the visual effects are impressive despite their overuse. They even acknowledge the movie's soundtrack by Danny Elfman, while still poking fun at the fact that every song seems to include Alice's name in it.
Overall, this episode of Honest Trailers provides a hilariously accurate critique of Disney's Alice in Wonderland. It highlights all of the movie's many flaws while still finding ways to appreciate some of the positives. Fans of the movie will likely find the trailer entertaining, while those who weren't quite sure what to think of it will probably feel validated in their confusion.
