Ep 17. True Conviction

  • April 30, 2018

In the season 19 episode 17 of Independent Lens titled "True Conviction," we are taken on a journey through the lives of three men who have been exonerated after serving a combined total of over 60 years in prison for crimes they did not commit. Christopher Scott, Johnnie Lindsey, and Steven Phillips now work together in Dallas, Texas, as private investigators for their own firm, the House of Renewed Hope.

The episode opens with Christopher Scott describing the harrowing events that led to his wrongful conviction and eventual exoneration. In 1997, Scott was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a man in Dallas, Texas. Scott maintained his innocence but was unable to convince a jury at his trial. It wasn't until ten years into his sentence that a witness recanted their testimony, and Scott was eventually released from prison in 2009, after serving 13 years for a crime he did not commit.

Johnnie Lindsey's story is equally shocking. In 1981, Lindsey was sentenced to life in prison after he was accused of raping and robbing a woman in Dallas. Lindsey was convicted solely on eyewitness testimony and served 26 years in prison before he was exonerated in 2007. Like Scott, Lindsey struggled to adjust to life outside of prison and experienced difficulty finding employment due to his criminal record.

Steven Phillips' story is perhaps the most tragic of the three. In 1982, Phillips was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of a Dallas police officer. Like Scott and Lindsey, Phillips maintained his innocence and was eventually exonerated after serving over 24 years in prison. However, due to the time he spent behind bars, Phillips was unable to see his daughter grow up and missed out on many important moments in her life.

Despite the injustices they have faced, Scott, Lindsey, and Phillips have all found a renewed sense of purpose in their work as private investigators. They use their own experiences to help others who have been wrongfully convicted and fight against the flaws in the criminal justice system that allowed for their own wrongful convictions.

Throughout the episode, we see the House of Renewed Hope team working on several cases, including that of a man who has been in prison for 16 years for a crime he did not commit. The team works tirelessly to uncover new evidence and advocate for the man's release, using their own experiences to navigate the legal system with a unique perspective.

The show also delves into the personal lives of the three men and how their experiences in prison have affected them. We see Scott struggling with PTSD and substance abuse, and Lindsey grappling with the loss of his family and the years he lost while in prison. However, despite these challenges, the men remain determined to help others and prove their own innocence in the eyes of the law.

Overall, "True Conviction" is a powerful and emotional episode that sheds light on the flaws in the criminal justice system and the devastating impact that wrongful convictions can have on individuals and their families. The House of Renewed Hope team serves as an inspiration, using their own painful experiences to make a positive impact on the world and fight for justice.
