Ep 1. Pilot

Patty Bladell has been overweight for most of her life. Her classmates, especially her arch-rival Magnolia, bullied her relentlessly for her size during her time at high school. Things get worse when she's punched in the face, badly, resulting in her mouth being wired shut for several months. This injury means that she cannot eat anything solid forcing her to go on a liquid diet for several months.

After a summer of recovery, Patty returns to high school determined to rebrand herself. She is now thin and her jaw has been wired permanently shut giving her a model's bone structure. Patty wants to take revenge on everyone who wronged her in the past and becomes determined to win the beauty pageant as a means to this end.

Patty's best friend Nonnie Thompson is dealing with her own problems and offers to help Patty become the beauty queen she desires to be. She introduces her to Bob Armstrong, a former lawyer and beauty pageant coach who is facing his own professional and personal crisis. Bob, who has been banned from coaching any beauty pageants after accusations of inappropriately touching a contestant, sees in Patty a chance for redemption and decides to take her on as his protégé.

Bob, who is struggling with his own personal problems, sees Patty as a chance to redeem himself, and sets his sights on helping her win the upcoming pageant. The two form an unlikely bond as they work together to make Patty's dream come true.

Patty's mother, who is a struggling single parent and an alcoholic, is struggling to make ends meet and is determined to milk her daughter's newly found looks and popularity. Bob begins to question her motives, but Patty is oblivious to her mother's attempts to use her as a means of getting rich quick.

As the big day approaches, Patty faces stiff competition from fellow contestants, including Magnolia, who still has it out for her. Patty's fixation on winning the pageant leads to her making some questionable decisions that could ultimately ruin her chances of winning.
