In the season 1 finale of Into the Dark, titled "Culture Shock," we follow a young Mexican woman named Marisol who is desperate to cross the US border in order to start a better life for herself. After being drugged and kidnapped by a coyote (someone who smuggles people across the border), Marisol wakes up in a strange, picturesque American town called Cape Joy. At first, everything seems perfect - the people are friendly, the town is clean, and there's plenty of work to go around. Plus, Marisol meets a kind man named Caleb who is eager to help her adjust to her new life.
As time goes on, however, Marisol begins to notice strange things happening in Cape Joy. She starts to see visions of her old life in Mexico, and her new friends and neighbors seem to be hiding something from her. Marisol teams up with another woman - a Mexican journalist who is also stuck in Cape Joy - to uncover the truth about the town and figure out how to escape.
As always with Into the Dark, "Culture Shock" deals with real-world issues in an unsettling and thought-provoking way. In this case, the episode tackles the dark underbelly of the immigration process and the way that vulnerable people can be taken advantage of. Along the way, we also see commentary on the American Dream and the way that it can turn sour when pursued too aggressively.
Visually, "Culture Shock" is stunning. The bright, vibrant colors of Mexico contrast sharply with the muted, pastel tones of Cape Joy, highlighting the stark differences between Marisol's old life and her new one. The imagery is often dreamlike and surreal, as Marisol struggles to make sense of what's happening to her.
Overall, "Culture Shock" is a compelling conclusion to a strong first season of Into the Dark. It's scary and thought-provoking in equal measure, and it offers a unique perspective on some of the most pressing issues facing our world today.
