In the sixth episode of Into the Dark's first season, entitled "Treehouse," we're introduced to a young woman named Celeste. She's a famous influencer on social media, and has built her entire career around looking effortlessly perfect and glamorous. She's built up a massive following who hang on her every word, but her success has come at a cost - she's alienated her family and struggled to maintain any genuine relationships.
At the beginning of the episode, we see Celeste returning home to celebrate her younger sister's birthday. She is immediately met with hostility from her siblings and parents, who are all tired of her self-absorbed attitude. Despite this, Celeste is determined to make the most of the trip and document it on her social media for her fans.
One day, Celeste and her younger brother take a hike through the nearby woods, but they quickly realize they've gotten lost. As they wander deeper into the forest, they stumble upon a mysterious and rundown treehouse. Consequently, they decide to seek shelter inside it, but strange things begin to happen almost immediately.
As the night goes on, Celeste and her brother start to become aware that they're not alone in the woods. Something is stalking them, watching them from the shadows and lurking just beyond the treehouse. They're forced to fight for survival against a terrifying, malevolent force that won't rest until it has consumed them both.
Throughout the episode, we see Celeste's character undergo a dramatic transformation. She begins as someone who is consumed by her own superficial nature, but as she tries to protect herself and her brother from this unseen threat, she discovers that she's capable of being strong and resourceful in ways she never thought possible.
The episode explores common horror tropes - the unknown, the lost and the fear of being preyed upon - and uses them to create a tense and eerie atmosphere. "Treehouse" is a classic horror story, but also manages to bring depth to its characters and explore the themes of family, trust, and personal growth.
With solid acting, effective tension, and suspenseful direction, "Treehouse" is a great addition to Into the Dark's first season. It's a genuinely scary and thrilling horror story that manages to say something meaningful about the human experience all while keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
