In the first episode of Japan Sinks: 2020, titled "The Beginning of the End," we are introduced to the Muto family – Ayumu, Mari, and their children, Ayumu Jr. and Go. They are a typical Tokyo family, with Ayumu working as a successful businessman and Mari as a stay-at-home mom. The episode starts with a stormy night, as the family is gathered around the TV watching a news report about a massive earthquake that has struck the coast of Japan. The report shows images of damage caused by the earthquake, including a large crack forming in the ground.
As the family is preparing for bed, they feel a strong tremor that shakes their building, causing them to rush outside. Their building is one of the few that remains standing after the initial earthquake. The family is relieved to be outside and safe, but their relief is short-lived. They see a large tidal wave approaching the city, and they run to escape it. The wave hits them, and the family is separated in the chaos.
Ayumu and Ayumu Jr. find themselves stranded on top of a building, while Mari and Go are swept away by the currents. Ayumu realizes that they need to find a way to get off the building, as it is slowly sinking into the water. They use a rope to try to pull themselves across to a neighboring building, but the rope breaks and they fall into the water.
Mari and Go are swept along by the currents until they are rescued by a man named Kite, who is searching for his own family. Kite takes Mari and Go to his makeshift shelter, where they meet other survivors of the disaster.
Meanwhile, Ayumu and Ayumu Jr. find refuge on a makeshift raft made out of debris. They meet a group of survivors who are also trying to find a way to safety, including another businessman named Koichiro and a teenage girl named Nanami. The group decides to head towards the mountains, hoping to find higher ground and safety.
As the episode progresses, we see the extent of the devastation caused by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The family members struggle to reunite with each other while dealing with the loss of the lives they knew before the disaster.
